Porsche 928 for Sale: How to Find the Best Deal on a Collector’s Car

by Don Fenton

The Porsche 928 has gained significant traction among collectors and enthusiasts, making it a sought-after classic. With its V8 power, futuristic design, and luxurious features, the 928 stands out as a unique grand tourer in Porsche’s history. However, finding the right 928 for sale at a fair price requires research, patience, and a keen eye for market trends and potential issues.

1. Where to Find a Porsche 928 for Sale

📌 Private Sellers

Buying from an individual owner can sometimes yield the best deals. Private sellers may have a well-maintained, enthusiast-owned 928 at a more negotiable price than dealerships. Always ask for service records and a detailed history of the car.

📌 Dealerships & Classic Car Specialists

Reputable classic car dealers often inspect and service their vehicles before selling, giving buyers peace of mind. However, expect higher prices due to dealership markups.

📌 Online Marketplaces & Auctions

Websites like Bring a Trailer, Hemmings, and AutoTrader Classics feature Porsche 928 listings. Auctions can offer competitive pricing, but bidding wars may drive prices up.

2. Key Factors to Consider Before Buying

✔️ Mileage & Maintenance History

A low-mileage Porsche 928 isn’t always better if it lacks regular maintenance. Look for cars with consistent service records, particularly for timing belt replacements, transmission servicing, and electrical repairs.

✔️ Common Issues to Check

Electrical System: Early 928s had complex wiring prone to issues.Cooling System: Inspect for radiator leaks and overheating problems.Timing Belt: A failed timing belt can lead to catastrophic engine damage

.✔️ Originality & Modifications

Original paint, wheels, and interior help retain a 928’s value. While performance upgrades may enhance the driving experience, they can impact collectibility.

3. Understanding Market Trends & Pricing

📈 Current Price Ranges (Estimated)
Early models (1978-1983): $20,000 – $40,000928 S4 (1987-1991): $35,000 – $60,000928 GTS (1992-1995): $60,000 – $150,000+

Rare models like the 928 GTS and manual transmission variants command the highest prices. Auction results and collector demand also influence pricing.

4. Final Tips for Getting the Best Deal

✅ Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) – A mechanic specializing in Porsche 928s can identify hidden issues.

✅ Negotiate Smartly – Research market values and use maintenance costs as a bargaining tool.

✅ Act Fast on a Good Deal – Well-priced, well-maintained 928s sell quickly in today’s market.

Final Thoughts

Finding a Porsche 928 for sale at the right price takes diligence and patience, but the reward of owning this V8-powered classic is well worth the effort. By understanding market trends, verifying maintenance records, and knowing where to look, buyers can secure a great deal on a 928 that will appreciate in value and provide an unforgettable driving experience. 🚗💨

Finding the right Porsche 928 at a fair price requires patience, research, and a thorough understanding of its unique mechanical needs. Unlike other classic Porsches, the 928’s advanced V8 powertrain and electronic systems demand proper maintenance and expert inspections before making a purchase. Whether you’re seeking a low-mileage collector’s piece or a well-maintained driver’s car, ensuring a clean service history, originality, and structural integrity will protect your investment and driving enjoyment.

To make the best buying decision, working with a Porsche 928 specialist for a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is crucial. A well-bought 928 not only holds its value but provides an unmatched grand touring experience, combining Porsche’s engineering excellence with timeless style.

The Porsche 928 was once an outlier in the Porsche lineup—an ambitious grand tourer designed to replace the iconic 911. With its front-mounted V8, futuristic styling, and luxury-focused design, the 928 was a radical departure from Porsche tradition. However, decades later, the 928 has gained a cult following, and collectors are beginning to recognize its value as a classic investment car.

But is the Porsche 928 truly a worthwhile investment? With rising prices, growing demand, and increasing rarity, many enthusiasts believe now is the time to buy. This guide explores the factors that influence a 928’s value, whether it’s a smart financial decision, and how to choose the right model for investment purposes.

1. Why the Porsche 928 Is Gaining Popularity

For years, the Porsche 928 was overshadowed by the rear-engine 911, but times are changing. Several factors are fueling the 928’s rise in collectibility:

✅ Unique Design & Engineering

Unlike any other Porsche, the 928 was built with a 50/50 weight distribution, offering a balanced, comfortable ride without sacrificing performance. Its V8 engine, pop-up headlights, and futuristic design make it stand out in the classic car world.

✅ Limited Production Numbers

While Porsche produced over 60,000 units between 1978 and 1995, the number of well-preserved 928s is dwindling. Many were neglected, making low-mileage, well-maintained examples rare and valuable.

✅ Increasing Market Value

Classic 928 values have risen sharply in recent years. Models that once sold for $10,000-$15,000 are now commanding $40,000 or more, with pristine, low-mileage examples selling for six figures at auctions.

2. Factors That Influence a Porsche 928’s Value

Not all 928s are equal when it comes to investment potential. Here are the most important factors that affect a 928’s worth:

📌 Mileage & Condition

-Low-mileage 928s hold higher value than high-mileage examples.

-Rust-free, accident-free bodies are crucial for long-term appreciation.

-Original paint, clean interiors, and factory parts increase desirability.

📌 Maintenance History

-The 928 is a complex car that requires specialized care.

-A detailed service history with records of timing belt replacements, electrical repairs, and engine maintenance is essential.

-Poorly maintained 928s can turn into money pits, making them a bad investment.

📌 Originality vs. Modifications

-Stock 928s are generally worth more than highly modified ones.

-Certain performance upgrades (such as suspension or exhaust enhancements) may increase appeal, but engine swaps and custom bodywork can hurt resale value.

📌 Rare & Special Editions

-928 S4 (1987-1991): One of the most desirable versions with 316 HP and improved aerodynamics.

-928 GTS (1992-1995): The final and most powerful 928, with 345 HP and wider rear fenders.

-Manual transmission models are rarer and more sought after than automatics.

3. How Much Does a Porsche 928 Cost Today?

📈 Market Trends & Prices

-Early models (1978-1983): $20,000 – $40,000 for well-maintained examples

-928 S4 (1987-1991): $35,000 – $60,000 depending on condition

-928 GTS (1992-1995): $60,000 – $150,000+ for rare low-mileage models

The 928 market has steadily appreciated, and experts predict values will continue rising as collector interest grows.

4. Is Buying a Porsche 928 a Smart Investment?

✅ Reasons to Invest in a Porsche 928:

-Increasing Collectibility: Prices are rising, making now a good time to buy.

-Unique Driving Experience: A front-engine V8 Porsche is rare, making it stand out.

-Limited Supply: Fewer well-maintained 928s remain on the road.

❌ Risks to Consider Before Investing:

High Maintenance Costs: Timing belt replacements and electrical repairs can be expensive.

Parts Availability: Certain components are becoming harder to find.

Patience Required: Classic cars don’t appreciate overnight—it’s a long-term investment.

5. Tips for Buying a Porsche 928 as an Investment

If you’re serious about investing in a Porsche 928, follow these expert tips:

✅ Buy the Best Example You Can Afford

It’s better to pay more upfront for a well-maintained 928 than to buy a cheap one that requires major repairs.

✅ Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI)

Have a 928 specialist inspect the car to check for hidden issues, rust, and mechanical problems.

✅ Prioritize Originality

Numbers-matching 928s (with original engine, transmission, and paint) hold value best.

✅ Look for Limited Editions

928 S4 and GTS models will continue to appreciate faster than base models.

6. Final Verdict: Is the Porsche 928 a Good Investment?T

he Porsche 928 is no longer an underappreciated classic—it has officially entered the collector car market, and values are climbing. While maintenance costs are high, a well-preserved 928 can be a rewarding investment for both financial returns and driving pleasure.

If you’re looking for a rare, unique Porsche with appreciating value, the 928 is a smart choice. Just be sure to buy wisely, maintain it well, and enjoy the drive—because no investment is more fun than a V8-powered Porsche grand tourer. 🚗💨

Are you considering buying a Porsche 928? Let us know in the comments what model you’re looking at!

The Porsche 928 has finally stepped into the spotlight as a true collector’s classic, offering a unique blend of V8 power, grand touring comfort, and cutting-edge (for its time) engineering. Unlike other vintage Porsches, the 928’s front-engine, transaxle layout provides a balanced, high-speed driving experience that remains impressive even today. With values on the rise, now is an excellent time to secure a well-maintained example before prices climb even higher.

However, buying a 928 as an investment requires careful consideration. Ensuring proper maintenance history, originality, and overall condition is key to making a smart purchase. Whether you’re restoring a neglected example or preserving a low-mileage collector’s piece, expert care will help protect both your investment and driving enjoyment. A well-maintained 928 doesn’t just hold its value—it delivers an unforgettable driving experience that modern cars struggle to match.

Why a Porsche 928 Engine Swap Might Be the Ultimate Upgrade

by Don Fenton

The Porsche 928 is renowned for its front-mounted V8 engine, which was ahead of its time when introduced. However, for some enthusiasts, modern performance, reliability, and efficiency make an engine swap a tempting upgrade. Whether you’re after raw power for track performance or a smoother, more efficient daily driver, swapping the 928’s engine can unlock a new level of performance.

1. Why Consider an Engine Swap?

While the 928’s original V8 is powerful, aging components, maintenance challenges, and limited aftermarket support can make performance upgrades costly. Instead of rebuilding the stock engine, many owners opt for a modern engine swap, benefiting from:

-Increased horsepower and torque

-Better fuel efficiencyImproved reliability and reduced maintenance

-Access to modern tuning and technology

For those wanting to future-proof their 928, an engine swap provides better long-term performance compared to maintaining a decades-old powertrain.

2. Best Engine Swap Options for the Porsche 928

LS V8 Conversion

One of the most popular 928 engine swaps is the GM LS-series V8. This modern pushrod engine offers big power potential, reliability, and affordability. Benefits include:

✅ More horsepower & torque (easily exceeding 400+ HP)

✅ Lighter weight for improved handling

✅ More aftermarket support for tuning & parts

✅ Lower maintenance costs

Modern Porsche V8 Swap

For Porsche purists, upgrading to a newer Porsche V8 (such as a Cayenne or Panamera engine) retains the brand’s engineering pedigree. Advantages include:

✅ Maintains Porsche DNA

✅ More sophisticated technology

✅ Better integration with existing components

While more expensive and complex, a modern Porsche engine swap keeps the 928 feeling like a true Porsche.

3. Things to Consider Before an Engine Swap

Swapping an engine requires more than just dropping in a new powerplant. Key factors include:

🔧 Wiring & electronics integration – Modern engines require updated ECUs, sensors, and tuning.

🔧 Transmission compatibility – Stock 928 transmissions may need upgrades to handle extra power.

🔧 Cooling system upgrades – More power means better radiators and cooling solutions.

🔧 Fabrication & mounting – Custom motor mounts and exhaust systems may be needed.

Final Thoughts: Is an Engine Swap Worth It?

A Porsche 928 engine swap isn’t for everyone, but for those seeking maximum performance, efficiency, and reliability, it can breathe new life into this classic grand tourer. Whether you choose an LS V8 for affordability and power or a modern Porsche V8 for authenticity, the right swap can make the 928 faster, more reliable, and more enjoyable to drive than ever before. 🚗💨

An engine swap is one of the most significant modifications a Porsche 928 owner can undertake, offering modern power, reliability, and efficiency while preserving the car’s grand touring essence. Whether you choose a lightweight, high-output LS V8 or a modern Porsche powerplant, the right swap can transform the driving experience, making the 928 faster, more reliable, and easier to maintain.

That said, a successful engine swap requires expertise, from ECU integration to transmission and cooling system upgrades. The 928’s original V8 was a marvel of engineering, and while rebuilding it may be the best path for purists, an engine swap offers next-level performance for those seeking big horsepower gains and modern drivability. With expert planning and execution, a properly swapped 928 can become the ultimate high-performance grand tourer—combining classic Porsche styling with modern muscle.

Porsche 928 Performance Mods: How to Unlock Maximum Horsepower

by Don Fenton

The Porsche 928 is an automotive masterpiece, blending luxury and performance in a way that few classic sports cars can match. Powered by a front-mounted V8 engine, the 928 was a bold move for Porsche, offering high-speed touring capabilities with impressive handling and balance. However, modern performance tuning techniques can unlock even more power, torque, and efficiency, pushing the limits of what this legendary car can achieve.

Whether you’re looking to enhance your Porsche 928 for daily driving, spirited backroad runs, or track performance, the right modifications can make all the difference. This guide explores the top performance upgrades to extract every ounce of speed and efficiency from your 928’s V8 engine.

1. Cold Air Intake: More Oxygen for More Power

One of the simplest yet most effective upgrades for the Porsche 928 is a cold air intake system. The factory intake is restrictive, limiting the amount of oxygen reaching the engine. More oxygen means better combustion, which leads to higher horsepower and improved throttle response.

Benefits of a Cold Air Intake System:

-Increases airflow for better combustion

The Porsche 928 is an iconic sports car, known for its powerful V8 engine, sleek design, and exceptional handling. While it was a groundbreaking vehicle in its time, modern tuning techniques can unlock even greater speed, efficiency, and driving precision. Whether you’re a 928 enthusiast looking to enhance its daily drivability or a performance junkie aiming for track-level upgrades, this guide explores the best tuning modifications that truly make a difference.

1. Engine Tuning: Unlocking More Power

Fuel Injector Upgrades

The Porsche 928’s fuel injectors play a crucial role in delivering the right mix of fuel and air into the combustion chamber. Over time, factory injectors may degrade, leading to less efficient combustion and power loss. Upgrading to high-flow fuel injectors allows for better fuel atomization, which improves throttle response, fuel efficiency, and horsepower.

Cold Air Intake System

An upgraded intake system can drastically improve the 928’s airflow, leading to increased power. Stock intakes are often restrictive, limiting how much oxygen reaches the engine. A cold air intake system delivers cooler, denser air, allowing for better combustion and an increase of 10-15 HP in some setups.

Performance Exhaust System

A high-performance exhaust system enhances both horsepower and sound. By upgrading to headers, high-flow catalytic converters, and performance mufflers, you reduce exhaust restrictions, allowing the engine to breathe more efficiently. A free-flowing exhaust system can boost power output by 15-20 HP, giving your 928 a deeper, throatier growl while improving backpressure management.

ECU Remapping & Chip Tuning
The engine control unit (ECU) dictates how the Porsche 928’s V8 operates, managing fuel delivery, ignition timing, and air-fuel ratios. Chip tuning or ECU remapping can optimize these settings, unlocking hidden horsepower and torque. A properly tuned ECU upgrade can improve:

-Throttle response

Performance Sway Bars

Upgrading to thicker sway bars enhances lateral stability, reducing body roll and improving cornering speed. This is a must-have mod for 928 owners who enjoy spirited driving or track days.

3. Transmission & Drivetrain Upgrades

Short-Throw Shifter

If your 928 is a manual, upgrading to a short-throw shifter reduces shift travel, making gear changes quicker and more precise.

Upgraded Clutch & Lightweight Flywheel

For manual transmission models, a performance clutch kit allows for better power delivery and faster engagement. Pairing it with a lightweight flywheel improves engine response and acceleration by reducing rotational mass.

Limited Slip Differential (LSD) Upgrade

The Porsche 928’s rear-wheel drive setup benefits greatly from an LSD upgrade. This modification:

-Improves traction in aggressive cornering

-Enhances acceleration out of turns

-Prevents unnecessary wheel spin

4. Brake System Upgrades: Stopping Power Matters

Speed is important, but control and braking power are just as crucial. The 928’s factory brakes are decent, but they can be significantly improved with modern upgrades.

Performance Brake Pads & Rotors

Switching to high-performance brake pads and drilled/slotted rotors increases braking efficiency and heat dissipation, reducing brake fade under hard driving.

Stainless Steel Brake Lines

Stock rubber brake lines can expand under pressure, causing a spongy brake feel. Upgrading to stainless steel lines improves braking response and pedal feel.

Big Brake Kit (BBK) Upgrade
For track-focused builds, a BBK (Big Brake Kit) with larger calipers and rotors ensures superior stopping power.

5. Aerodynamics & Weight Reduction

Front Splitters & Rear Spoilers
Adding front splitters and a rear wing improves downforce, keeping the 928 stable at high speeds.
Weight Reduction (Carbon Fiber Upgrades)
Replacing heavy stock panels with carbon fiber hoods, doors, and trunk lids can shave 100+ lbs off the vehicle’s weight, leading to better acceleration and handling.
6. Interior & Technology Upgrades

While tuning the mechanical components of the Porsche 928 is essential, modernizing its interior and tech can enhance comfort and usability.

Digital Gauge Clusters & LED Lighting
Updating analog gauges to modern digital displays provides real-time performance tracking. LED interior lighting also improves visibility and aesthetics.

Upgraded Audio & Infotainment

Many 928 enthusiasts install Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and high-quality speakers for modern audio convenience.

Sport Seats & Steering Wheel

This is my second 928. Back in the day I would do most of the maintenance myself. Well, that was 25 years ago, and I will not work on cars on jack stands anymore. Back in the 90’s most foreign car mechanics would work on the Porsche 928 with no hesitancy. In 2022 I have found it nearly impossible to find anyone who will look at a 928 much less do any work on them. The few that I did find that would “take a look” did not give me a warm fuzzy. So, as politely as I could be, I avoided having any work done by folks that appeared to not know what they were getting into.

At my wits end and feeling helpless I got in touch with Roger who introduced me to Don down in Pflugerville Texas. After speaking with Don for about ten minutes I knew that he was the real deal. I was very relieved when my 928 was in his shop getting the attention she needed. Don was very upfront, and communication was excellent.

The “while we are in there” preventative maintenance he recommended has saved me untold time and expense in the long run. He is very skilled at his craft. I would highly recommend Don to perform all levels of work, from routine maintenance to major overhaul/restoration.

I am extremely pleased with my experience with Don at 928 Done Right!

Anyone that owns a Porsche 928 can appreciate the difficulties of working on them and nuances to attention to detail that they demand. Deferred maintenance with these cars are death nails to both their longevity and reliability. The particular nuanced service issues cannot be ignored, not for long anyway. I have, personally, made the mistake of taking a classic GT Porsche to a shop that does not have a good knowledge base with them. I paid for that mistake handsomely.

Don knows these cars. Inside and out. He creates a list of critical items and looks after the two things there cars are known for; IF they are properly looked after. I just drove last week my daily driver, an ‘85 Euro, 1700 miles round trip. Can’t enough positive things about Don. If you have work done on your 928, I can’t recommend enough.I have a 928 that was my dads that he purchased new but as he got older didn’t do too much to keep it up. I went to several other higher end shops that didn’t have close to the knowledge Don had on what a 928 needs or even what to look at. I has Don go through my 928 with the directive: I want it to be a car I can drive on a regular basis and everything works. Don delivered. Having driven this car when new/young, it feels a lot like a remember. Don knows exactly what to look at, has great attention to detail, and can prioritize what’s important to address. My work included many of the major sub systems of the car that amounted to a significant mechanical and electrical systems restoration.
